WHAT IS STRUCTURAL INTEGRATION?

ABOUT THIS WORK

SI (Structural Integration) is about the balance of the layers of tissues in the body and focuses on establishing an appropriate relationship between the superficial, middle and deep layers.

It gives the body more space and length. It also gives the client lift, lightness, more movement in the body and energy.

This type of deep tissue work is based on the work of Dr. Ida Rolf and further expanded by her student, Author of bestseller 'The Anatomy Trains' Thomas Myers. 'The Anatomy Trains SI approach is to free the binding and shortening in these connective tissues, what we refer to as the “fascial network”, and to re-educate the body in efficient and energy-sustaining (as opposed to energy-robbing) patterns.'  -Tom Myers

The term "Anatomy Trains" indicates that there are specific anatomical fascial connections/continuities, between the different body regions. These "trains" run forward, back, sideways and across the body at different depths.

The classic Anatomy Trains Structural Integration (ATSI) concept include 12 treatments, during which all these
fascial continuities are processed to compensate for imbalances and resolve stress zones. The treatment of fascia up to its deepest layers is experienced as very deep and liberating.

It is particularly beneficial if you suffer from chronic pain, struggle to recover from injuries, don't feel 'at home' in your body, or are simply looking to improve your core-connection, overall posture, movement possibilities, -efficiency and -coordination.

On your first visit we'll have a detailed discussion regarding your health history and current goals for our work together.

We begin each session with a postural and movement assessment to know what is already working well in your body and to discover what to work on to make some positive changes.

FAQ's

How is this work different to massage?
Structural Integration bodywork is an interactive process between the practitioner and the client. During a treatment your participation (movement, breath and communication) is one of the key ingredients to the effectiveness of this work and key to getting most out of your session. The techniques applied target your fascia tissues.

As Structural Integration practitioners we carefully evaluate your movement restrictions and postural organisation, and then work systematically through the whole body, unlocking shortened, stuck tissues that so often cause postural pain and tense muscles.  We encourage our clients to let go of the habituated, fixed, and unhelpful muscular patterns to enable them to achieve a more balanced body.  Locked energy will be released which is often experienced as invigorating and the enhanced ability of the body to heal itself. Structural Integration is known to regain a better relationship with the body.

Does it hurt?
No. Contrary to the classical Rolfing (the oldest brand of Structural Integration) Anatomy Trains Structural Integration (ATSI) stresses the importance of 'No pain- no pain.' Like sports massage, Structural Integration is very hands-on, I only apply forces that are comfortable for the client (note: 'comfortable' is different to 'willing-to-tolerate'). By working together and communicating we will find the best way to allow your body to open and release.

What to wear to the sessions?
The work is done in full-coverage underwear or minimal clothing to your comfort level.
Women may wear regular underwear, a two-piece bathing suit or a bra (regular bra, preferably a bralette; not a sports bra with a racer back) and either boy-short panties or athletic shorts. For guys, board shorts, athletic shorts or regular underwear are acceptable. Please avoid using lotions or oils  prior to your appointment.

How often do I need to do a session?
Sessions can be once a week, fortnightly to once a month, depending on your personal goals and needs.

What to do between each session?
Between sessions you will get 'homework' in order to forster the new alignment and movement patterns we worked on. This often includes specific movement, breathing or awareness exercises in order to pay attention on how you move and hold your body in space.
